The Rhode Island Council for the Arts sponsored a fully funded field trip for students in US History II Honors to visit the Breakers in Newport! Students were highly intrigued by the architecture, art, and history of the gilded age. As always, student behavior was impeccable; they represented Scituate High School admirably!

“The amount of detail put in each room of The Breakers was truly impressive. The fact that this home was only used during the summer and considered a “cottage” by the Vanderbilt family seems shocking by today’s standards.” -William Polouski
“It was amazing to see all the architectural styles and all the art. Learning that they imported many things from other countries and embraced other cultures in the style of the house was interesting. My favorite part of the house was the grand staircase with a tapestry of the story of Alexander the Great with a beautiful stained glass ceiling.” -Jessica Adams

Hope Elementary School had so much fun at Field Day yesterday! Students played lots of outdoor games and enjoyed the sunshine.
Last night, North Scituate Elementary had their student art on display for families and friends during the school's Art Night event! Students also had the opportunity to show friends and family members our STEAM showcase. We also had a book fair, chorus concert, and even a food truck. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and enjoyed this super fun night!
Students in US History II Honors engaged in a mock trial of Julius Streicher’s Trial at Nuremberg for conspiracy and crimes against humanity! Students reviewed Nazi records and examples of propaganda from the German newspaper “Der Sturmer” that Julius Streicher was the founder, publisher and editor of. Students came away with a deep understanding of Robert’s Rules of Order for a courtroom. The enthusiasm during this activity for understanding history, and court procedures was outstanding!
Mrs. Dailey’s Geometry class worked in teams to solve Pythagorean Theorem application problems, including calculating the length of a pass in a basketball drill, the distance between two cities on a railway, and how high up the side of a house a ladder of a particular length will reach when the base is placed a given distance from the house.
Each team created a poster with a diagram of their assigned problem, the definition of the variables used, the equation they created to represent the relationship between the quantities, and the solution. Then, teams presented their work to their classmates.

The SHS music department recently traveled to New York City to enjoy the Broadway show The Lion King! This trip helped students to prepare for our pops concert on May 22nd with our Broadway theme. All are welcome to attend the performance at 7 PM in the high school auditorium!
In April, Clayville students in 5th grade took a field trip to Rhode Island College (RIC) where they participated in an all-elementary team-building field trip!
The completion of the nutrition unit in our high school Physical Training for Active Careers class involved students crafting their own protein smoothies. This emphasized the importance of essential nutrient consumption and the timing of protein intake post-exercise!
Middle School sports have been on fire lately! Track, baseball, and softball have been putting in the work this season! Way to go Spartans!
On April 23rd, Hope students were treated to a performance by the Echo Dance Team. The students were treated to a high energy and engaging performance that also echoed the school's core values of respect, responsibility, kindness, and perseverance. Thank you to Hope's awesome PTA for sponsoring such an amazing event!
Scituate High School’s U.S. Government class participated in a mock election on Wednesday, April 24, after two SHS students Ava Gregory and Isabella DeFusco, volunteered to work with the Rhode Island Department of State’s Director of Civic Education, Suzy Alba. During weekly meetings with Alba, they developed a plan to host a mock election at SHS where they could focus on helping students get more familiar with the voting process and inform them of their voting rights.
“Voter turnout isn’t always that great, especially for younger voters,” said Gregory. “With the election coming up this year, we wanted to make a point to help our peers be more informed and better prepared so they can feel more confident going into the polls.”
Gregory and DeFusco are juniors at SHS who volunteered to be part of the Department of State’s Student Civic Liaison Program last year. The goal of the program is to create connections between local students and their government. Students meet monthly to hear from community leaders, elected officials, and education and non-profit professionals. They also take part in community-focused initiatives such as organizing voting registration drives, creating a civic engagement club, recruiting youth poll workers for primary and general elections, and developing programs that will make a difference in their high schools.
“The networking and leadership skills that Ava and Bella are gaining from this program are invaluable,” said Principal Michael Hassell. “This year will be many of our student’s first time voting in the polls, and practicing filling out a ballot and keeping students informed so that they know their voting rights will help them feel more assured as they prepare for this election.”
Before the mock election began, Gregory and Defusco gave a presentation explaining how young voters can register to vote, what information and documentation they will need, and how they can determine where the closest polling location is. Students were then given a practice ballot and had the opportunity to insert the ballot into a real electronic voting machine run by Elections Information Coordinator Nick Edwards.
Last night the Spartans took part in Goodnight Lights! Students used their flashlights to send support and goodnight wishes to the children at Hasbro Children's Hospital.
Our wonderful middle school and high school band and chorus come to the elementary schools to perform and demonstrate instruments for the 5th-grade students! After the event, 5th-grade students get to decide whether they want to do chorus or band next school year when they enter the middle school!
